The TV series begins with Morse getting into the Oxford City Police in 1965. A double murder occurs, Morse starts working with Thursday. Morse starts to solve one difficult case after another, his greatness starts to irritate his superiors, especially Detective Sergeant Jakes and Chief Superintendent Bright.
Morse gets shot, he is now taking it slow, his father dies in 1965.
It’s 1966 and Morse returns on duty. Thursday starts keeping a close eye on him, as a result of the shooting, Morse is paranoid and starts drinking more alcohol than before. On his return, he is presented with three cases, he makes several mistakes, despite the errors he manages to solve the cases. In one of the cases, he gets beaten into a concussion, he is taken to hospital where he meets Monica Hicks, a nurse he takes great interest in, at the same time, Thursday’s daughter takes interest in Morse.
In 1966 Morse expresses his desire to leave the US with Monica and becoming a teacher, with other words, he declared his intention in leaving the police force. All of this happens after Thursday announced his retirement. Thursday and Morse are called by Assistant Chief Constable Clive Deare to investigate a corruption within the city and the county police. Thursday gets into a trap, Morse is the only one willing to save him. Thursday is critically wounded after being shot on the chest. Deare attempy to kill Morse, Deare dies after being show by a girl. The season ends with a cliffhanger, is Thursday alive? Morse gets arrested.
