The head of the FBI Behavioral Science unit, Jack Crawford calls Will Graham to help them catch a serial killer. He has kidnapped 8 women now, all looking alike and always doing so on Friday. Graham is someone who dislikes to go out on the field. His empathy and tendency to get too involved don’t do him any good. Crawford arranges for a well known psychiatrist named Hannibal to work with him.
Will and Jack attempt to catch a serial killer who burries his victims alive, meanwhile tabloid journalist Freddie sets targets on Will.
In order to give Abigail closure, Will and Hannibal take her to the scene of her father’s crimes. The copycat strikes again and things go from bad to worse.
A series of family murders occur, Will believes that the children are responsible, they were kidnapped and probably brainwashed into killing their families to make way for the “new families”. Against advice, Hannibal takes Abigail out of the hospital for some scary psychiatric practices that makes her loyal to him.
A horrendous murder happened in a motel room, the victims were in praying positions.The BAU team finds out that the killer uses medication for brain tumor.
A nurse in a hospital for the Criminally insane gets murdered by her patient, Abel Gideon. As Graham attempts to find out if Gideon is the Ripper, Crawford had consulting on the case two years previously when she disappeared.
The BAU is called after a man was found in a bathtub with his kidney removed, Graham is not sure whether this is an act of organ harvester or the Ripper has claimed his first victim in over 2 years. Dr. Bloom starts believing that Graham is obsessed with catching the Ripper.
Graham investigates another gruesome and violent murder where the victims throat was opened and a cello neck inserted through the mouth. Graham’s psychological state deteriorates after he starts having hallucinations of animals in pain, it all begun after his feelings for Alana Bloon were rejected.
Graham is found in Lecter’s office three and a half hours later from when he was investigating a crime scene on the beach, he has no recollections of how he got there, it’s a good sign of his unstable mental state. The murder scene was a lot of dead bodies, some just for a while and others for decades.
Beth LeBeau is found dead after drowning in her own blood after her face was slit. Graham mental state keep getting worse, after he loses hours of not knowing where he is, Lecter refers him to a neurologist.
Dr. Abel Gideon escapes custody and targets the psychiatrists who were trying to help him. While Alana Bloom is in protective custody, Gideon rules Freddie Lounds into a trap, he then forces her to write an article about him. Graham starts having severe hallucinations.
After Graham’s comment, Hannibal leaves a comb in the chamber Georgia Madchen who accidentally sparks a fire in the hyperbaric chamber and is burned to death. Graham realizes that the several recent murders were all done by the copycat and that Georgia was killed because she may have remembered the face of Dr. Sutcliffe’s killer.
Following Graham’s strange trip, he is taken into custody by Crawford by the alleged murder of Abigail. They found her ear in his kitchen and her blood under his fingernails. Alana is devestated and can’t believe what is happening, she attempts to find out what was the underlying cause for Graham’s actions eve though Crawford claims there is none. After some tests, it is shown that there is solidity in her claims.
Hannibal and Jack try to get used to the fact that Will is in jail, meanwhile Kade Purnell visits Will who stills claims he is innocent
The BAU team is getting closer to the answer of where did all the bodies come from in an attempt to find the killer. Graham on the other hand starts plotting a masterpiece plan within the asylum.
Crawford goes against his directives from the FBI and risks losing his job in the process by telling the court that it was him who pushed Will to the limit.
Another murder happens, a skull is converted into a beehive, the FBI is on the case.
Will meets with the copycat killer and orders him to execute Hannibal, luckily Gideon overhears this and tell Alana so she can stop Will of becoming a murderer.
Jack crashes Hannibal’s party in order to investigate Will, meanwhile a city’s councilman’s body is found intertwined with a tree.
Will is finally released from the Asylum, Jack discovers Miriam Lass and it gives him hope of finding the Ripper.
Will helps with a case where a woman’s body is found inside a horse. Will and Hannibal race against the clock to save a witness they strongly believe is in great danger.
The BAU team take a deeper look into a body that was torn apart by two different animal species. Will meets a very strange person, Hannibal’s patient, they met after one of his sessions. Hannibal tries to find out Will’s true self, he makes a test and is surprised by the outcome. Hannibal gives a useful advice to Margot about her brother being violent in nature.
Freddie Lounds disappear, Jack and his team get to the truth of it. During a session, Will shares a vision of how he would kill Hannibal. Jack brings a patient that will help Will catch Hannibal.
Jack, Will, and Alana step into dangerous teritory in an attempt to catch Hannibal, he has a special surprise for Will.
